AASL Standards
The American Assocation School Libraries has developed learning standards to guide and centralize the learning process in the school library media center. School library media specialists need to be able to perform a multitude of diverse responsibilities in the school library media center. Not only do the standards encompass reading, literature appreciation and inquiry, but also include transliteracy skills. The 21st century school library media specialist needs to be able to teach students to have dispositions, habits of mind as well as the ability to read across a wide range of formats in order to succeed and flourish in a global environment. As school library media specialists wear many hats, the standards account for their roles in leadership, advocacy, administration, information technology, collaboration and teaching.
